Experts now believe that investment in data backup and disaster recovery from businesses around the world is set to increase in the coming years. This is in spite of evidence which suggests that IT budgets are going to be frozen or squeezed as businesses struggle to cope after the recession.
Analysts at ABI Research have suggested in a new study that by the year 2015 over £26 billion will be spent annually on disaster recovery solutions. This is nearly double the level of investment made in 2009, which just tipped the scales at over £16 billion.
ABI’s Larry Fisher said that the drastic increase would be initiated by the growing reliance on electronic data storage and retrieval, which was becoming a common requirement across all businesses.
Mr Fisher explained that government regulations require that a majority of larger organisations adhere to the rules governing proper practice in data management and security and that this necessity would drive greater revenues into the disaster recovery industry.
Mr Fisher also said that although not all businesses were required to protect their data properly by legislation, there was a proven desire amongst the most progressive firms to safeguard their customer data, as well as to protect themselves from disasters of all kinds.
The cost of proper disaster recovery services is falling and the systems are now easier to manage than ever before. Virtualisation and cloud computing are playing a significant part in this process according to experts.
Mr Fisher warned that vendors of backup solutions and disaster recovery systems would need to make their products easy for the average businessperson to understand. He said that acceptance of the technologies on offer would only come with an uncomplicated idea as to how advanced concepts such as the cloud actually work.
The threats that face businesses with data storage requirements are diverse and ever-changing. As a result, disaster recovery in the digital age is becoming widely accepted as an essential part of any business continuity plan. If the experts are right, most businesses will be allocating much more money to ensuring that they are properly protected in the coming months and years.

Experts now believe that the majority of the world’s biggest businesses are infected by malicious Trojan software, which means that private data is harvested almost constantly.
Data security expert Uri Rivner warned against complacency, saying that every firm in every sector is a potential target for Trojan infection. He also said that hackers were modifying Trojans to have greater potency than in the past and that financial institutions are just one of many types of business that are under threat in the modern environment.
Speaking in San Francisco at the 2010 RSA Conference, Mr Rivner revealed that the vast majority of the firms listed in the Fortune 500 were subject to Trojan attacks, with data mined continually and extracted to the master servers operated by the hackers.
The Zeus Trojan is still forming the building blocks of the most dangerous Trojan types and its popularity is continuing to rise as its capabilities to destroy businesses are proved time and again.
Employee data is frequently targeted using Zeus according to Mr Rivner, although this is not exclusively limited to the type of industrial information that may initially have been assumed. Everything that a worker enters into an infected machine is logged and sent to a remote location, including passwords for social networking and even online dating services.
Mr Rivner warned that even extremely personal details, such as the blood type of the affected employee, could be compromised by a Trojan infection. Building a picture of a person and then using those details to create duplicate identities is something of which criminals are readily capable, within even the most trusted of firms.
The silver lining in this instance is that Mr Rivner believes that criminals are not as yet able to turn private information to widespread financial gain, which means that businesses still have time to protect themselves against the most common threats.
Security experts believe that creating multiple fail-safe procedures to protect sensitive data, or switching to a solution which ensures that data is properly protected at all times, will help to combat Trojans.

A new survey has shown that European businesses are not protecting their data properly, leaving them open to serious problems in the event of downtime and making recovery difficult.
The report revealed that 63 per cent of SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) in France, the UK and Germany are likely to take in excess of a day to overcome issues that arise after downtime.
More than 600 firms were questioned as part of the Vanson Bourne study, with the majority of respondents demonstrating that they were not backing up data in a way that would ensure its safety and ease of access. It was shown that there is a general lack of confidence in most current systems amongst smaller businesses.
Only 60 respondents said that recovery after a disastrous event would be completed within an hour, which meant that a tiny minority felt prepared for viral infections or general on-site systems failure.
Any kind of disaster within small businesses can lead to an unsustainable loss of custom and revenue, with essential ties to the internet being cut and personal data being lost or erased. Recent studies have shown that in many cases small businesses fold as the result of extensive downtime.
25 per cent of respondents to this survey said that they rely on manual backup to protect and store the data accumulated by portable computing devices such as laptops. Nearly 20 per cent revealed that the backup of laptops and portable storage was not something that they had ever performed.
60 per cent of the European businesses questioned said that they had no central server system for backup and that they were relying on individual computers to act as storage facilities, leaving data dispersed in an irregular, inconsistent fashion.
The study found that UK businesses were far less backup-aware than their continental counterparts. Backup expert David Blackman said that the survey painted a surprising picture of the modern IT landscape within European businesses, especially since the damaging nature of downtime and data loss has been so widely evidenced.

Businesses are unable to property protect and backup their data because of budgetary constraints according to a new survey of over 400 leading UK businesses.
Although most businesses understand that proper preparation for disaster to ensure continuity is important, economic pressures are forcing management teams to tighten the purse strings when it comes to data security and storage.
40 per cent of respondents to the survey revealed that despite a perpetually increasing demand for more storage and backup facilities, there was not enough money to invest in improving their current systems, so they were being asked to perform the impossible.
All of the firms questioned had 1000 employees or more and 57 per cent said that their data storage requirements were increasing by a fifth with each passing year.
This growth is occurring in the context of budgets which are not increasing, or in the worst cases reducing from previous levels, for 75 per cent of businesses.
Jon Mills, who supervised the survey which was carried out by Sepaton, said that the constant increase in data storage requirements was afflicting virtually every business, regardless as to size. Mr Mills said that in a relatively short time some firms would have to face storage requirements doubling annually.
41 per cent of respondents said that there was a worrying deficit in funding for data protection, which was leading to a poorer quality of service and a lack of customer confidence.
The survey also revealed that disaster recovery was a problematic issue for many, with 46 per cent indicating that existing targets in this area were being missed. However, many are putting their faith in cloud platforms, or are intending to consider them in the near future, as a way of cutting the cost of data protection and disaster recovery.
The survey has clearly revealed that a shortage of storage space for sensitive data is becoming a real issue for many large businesses in the UK and around the world. With budgets under pressure, the numbers looking to outsource storage will surely increase.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has taken further steps to make data protection a priority for businesses and organisations by authoring a study that explores the actual value of private data.
The Privacy Dividend report provides the necessary tools to analyse personal data that firms may have stored on their systems and then calculate just how much the information is actually worth to their business. This will then allow organisations to more fully understand the fiscal responsibility that comes with storing large amounts of data.
The ICO hopes that the Privacy Dividend report will be a catalyst for proper planning of investment in data security. The report also gives details as to how businesses can initiate their own schemes intended to protect customer and client privacy.
Information Commissioner Christopher Graham released a statement in support of the new report, saying that although legislation and punishment acted as incentives for better data practices in the business sector, the damage done to a business’ reputation would be more significant in the long term if data was not property protected.
Mr Graham hopes that businesses will be better persuaded to update their data protection policies if they are presented with tangible values placed upon their stored data, which is precisely what the new report facilitates. Eventually Mr Graham hopes that a new ethos of proper data management and security will become standard across the board.
The ICO presented the Privacy Dividend report last week during the Data Protection Officer event, which was held in Manchester.
Security expert Chris McIntosh said that there was a widespread lack of appreciation for the threats posed to private information stored by businesses. He supported the new ICO report and its attempts to raise awareness and offer incentives.
Mr McIntosh also said that businesses needed to be convinced that it was a ‘when’ not an ‘if’ when it came to data loss or attack and that serious discussions would be necessary to ensure that the full gravity of the situation was broadcast to as many business leaders as possible.

In 2009 it has been revealed that the UK was subject to almost daily attacks from groups of international hackers, many of whom were either partly or wholly sponsored by foreign states or terrorist organisations with backing from unknown global powers.
In an interview with The Observer, security expert Lord West of Spithead revealed that 300 notable attacks were launched against UK businesses and organisations in 2009, but a far greater number of lower grade attacks were fended off each and every day.
The vast majority of the high level attacks remain unpunished, as the groups that perpetrate them are usually working for intelligence agencies with foreign funding. Tracing the attackers is virtually impossible according to Lord West, who said that the lack of online regulation made clandestine hacks and data theft relatively simple to carry out.
Lord West revealed that data detailing secret designs for aerospace engineering projects and other hugely expensive and sensitive undertakings had been stolen by third party groups. He went on to say that other states would only deny involvement when asked about the thefts, leaving the UK authorities with little to act upon.
Lord West also suggested that the UK had the means to retaliate in the online cold war that appears to be being waged between a number of global entities. He said that although the UK is not currently involved in any kind of counter-attacks, it would certainly be willing to consider the viability of such a strategy if matters continue to worsen.
Heads of industry and leaders in positions of power in the West are beginning to approach the threat of data security with increased attention and gravity. The Office of Cyber Security has been created by the UK government and is aimed at tackling the threat head-on, whilst in the USA President Obama has called upon the services of Howard Schmidt to ensure that America is better prepared for international digital espionage.
The immense cost of data security and protection for businesses has been revealed by various studies and reports, with some believing that central intervention and counter-measures may be necessary to restore the balance.

Two of the world’s leading security experts have warned that cloud vendors could be losing out on valuable customers and damaging the perceived integrity of the cloud as a whole, because of a failure to confront and fix key security concerns.
RSA head Art Coviello explained during a keynote speech that opened his firm’s 2010 conference that those within the data security industry would need to work harder to ensure that cloud-based services were secure environments.
Mr Coviello also said that many businesses were delaying their adoption of cloud-based technology because of real and imagined threats to the security of the cloud and that cloud vendors would need to put up a united front to reassure businesses that they could trust the technology.
Mr Coviello also pushed for improvements in the efficiency of cloud-based backup and data storage systems, since with more virtualised servers being created, accessibility and efficiency were of equal importance as matters relating to security.
The best way in which to ensure security and sustainability of cloud-based services is to have these fundamental features integrated with the basic infrastructure, according to Mr Coviello.
Meanwhile the CTO of Amazon’s online arm had very similar sentiments to convey during CeBIT in Hannover this week. Werner Vogels said that businesses are definitely interested in cloud computing services with many requiring that any new system that they use is ready for cloud integration.
Mr Vogels also said that offering tangible, demonstrable security measures to protect the cloud were essential to winning new clients. Adhering to legislation and regulation recognised by the industry at large would be the only way for cloud vendors to temper the fears relating to security.
Mr Vogels was similarly concerned with the types of tools that would be available to businesses in order to ensure that data stored on the cloud was easily manageable at the same time as being totally safeguarded. Business continuity could be seriously hampered by any downtime and Mr Vogels called for cloud vendors to create their products on firm foundations which would be less susceptible to driving financial losses for clients as a result of downtime or accessibility issues.
